These young women are getting water from Lake Victoria, very close to the source of the Nile. It is about one kilometer from their village and they will carry the "jerry cans" on their heads back to the village where the water will be used for cooking, drinking, clothes washing, and personal hygiene. They may make this trip several times each day. Younger children will carry smaller jerry cans.
