  • Selverani worked as a "servant" in the house where the NGIO, R.I.D. E. is located. She is a "Dalit" (untouchable), and has been taken in by the family that manages R.I.D.E., and basicallyt became a family member. When this photo was taken she was about 22, and shortly therreafter, her 45 year old uncle with two children, whose wife recently died, declared that she would have to become his wife. Selverani had no choice but to accept. R.I.D.E.'s mission is to help end child labor in the silk sari weaving industry of Kanchipurim.

  • Many laborers in Soutern India are women. These women are carrying buckets which will be filled with sand and/or cement for building. When filled, the buckets will be carried on their heads, and often they will have to climb a rudimentary ladder to get to second or third story. Women laborers get paid less than one half of what a male laborer would earn doing the same job.

  • These young women in Kanchipurim are washing clothes by rubbing them on the road and using a bar of hand soap as the washing agent. The water they are using is not very clean, and the combination of the abrasive washing style and the quality of the water results in clothes that often get tears and holes and are not as clean as if they were washed in cleaner water. Never the less, in this part of India, there is a severe lack of potable, clean water.
