These young women in Kanchipurim are washing clothes by rubbing them on the road and using a bar of hand soap as the washing agent. The water they are using is not very clean, and the combination of the abrasive washing style and the quality of the water results in clothes that often get tears and holes and are not as clean as if they were washed in cleaner water. Never the less, in this part of India, there is a severe lack of potable, clean water.
