This woman was carrying Kasava while walking on the beach near Elmina. Kasava is a staple food of Ghana and is used primarily to make "fufu'. She will either bring it to market, or to her home for her personal use. Walking along the beach is often easier, (and safer) than walking along the roadside where there are no sidewalks and the risk of being hit by a car or truck is high. This beach is very close to Elmina Castle, a former slave fort and now a World Heritage Site.

  • This Muslim woman is a recipient of sheep from Heifer International through Pro-Link, and NGO in Ghana. This photo was taken as a part of volunteer work by Peter Schnurman, the photographer, and his wife Hinda who were both volunteering for Pro-Link from May - Septenmber 2006. This woman lived in a Muslim village near Hohoe. In addition to ProLink's project with Heifer International, the women and the men in this villlag also participated in a program run by ProLink to learn about HIV/AIDS and reproductive health.

  • This young woman was the "camp cook" for a Ugandan Ranger troop in Kidepo National Park on the Ugandan - Sudan border. We were in Uganda working as volunteers for Reach Out, an HIV/AIDS clinic. We were in this very rermote area to view wildlife, and while there ran into cattle rustlers from Sudan and hence had to seek shelter from the ensuing gunfighting between the Rangers and the cattle thieves. The haze in the background is actually dust from a large sandstorm from the Sahara desert in the north, held stationary over all of Uganda by high winds from Madagascar. This sandstorm kept the bush pilot from landing for 3 days in order to pick up our group. While none of us were injured in the battle, several of the cattle thieves were killed.

  • These are the hands of four women who live in the "Acholi Quarter", in Mbuya, one of the poorest areas of Kampala. The Acholi Quarter is where many of the clinets of Reach Out, an NGO which operates an HIV/AIDS clinic has many clients. These women were waiting for food from the World Food Program to be distributed that day from Reach Out. We were in the Acholi Quarter as a part of our volunteer work with Reach Out.
  • This woman was working as a gardner near Agra, the city where the famous Taj Mahal is located. We were in India as volunteers with RIDE, an NGO working to eliminate child labor in the silk sari weaving industry.
